ROTARY CLUB OF PIETERMARITZBURG AZALEA,
SOUTH AFRICA

The ecstatic aunties of Slangspruit Primary School are joined by Sybil Maree & Rob Snyders of Rotary Azalea, Pietermaritzburg; in their revamped & upgraded kitchen.

After the representatives from the Rotary Azalea community development team visited Slangspruit School, it was clear that the direst need was in the room used as a kitchen. With no plumbing & running water; 950 dishes had to be washed in a huge metal basin with cold water hauled from the nearest outside tap. Aside from the massive effort, this practice was less than hygienic. The vegetable & food preparation was accomplished without running water as well.
The aunties also had hardly a work surface to peel & prepare vegetables, catering for 950 hungry children.

Mr. Msomi the school principal is joined by Sybil & Rob.
Rob & his team worked tirelessly to install plumbing by running piping from the main system, creating drainage & having a solar tank installed on the roof. If ever there was a country where sunlight can be harvested, it’s South Africa!
The kitchen now has two extra deep stainless steel sinks & extensive work surfaces adjoining the sinks; makes for a hygienic & efficient environment. Hot water feeds into the sinks from the solar tank.
Slangspruit School & Ukulapha Community Outreach thanks Rotary Azalea most sincerely!
