Mags Johnston from Victoria, BC, Canada
Mags realized a lifelong dream by visiting South Africa!
We were thrilled to welcome her; she spent 2 months with us, January to March 2010 and survived the heat!
Carolyn knew that Mags was deeply touched by her experience of this complex land, which has so many mysteries and ambiguities. In the 2 psycho educational workshops for caregivers Ukulapha ran while she was here, Mags heard many heart wrenching stories; the consequence of poverty, disempowerment and HIV/Aids and endless evidence of women’s resilience beyond belief.
Mags’ background in nursing and Hospice were immensely helpful to both support the women and herself, witnessing unimaginable lives being lived with as much dignity as possible.
She brought levity to the group by teaching the Hokey Pokey and the women laughed and laughed with glee!
Mags was a rich source of support for Carolyn and the work of Ukulapha bringing an ‘outside’ perspective, deep intuition with plenty of heart and soul.

Mags met Ayanda, a 5 year old orphan living with orphans who took her in as a baby; who crept into Mags’ heart instantly. Ayanda is smart, intelligent & curious whilst also being gentle, deliberate & thoughtful. She is in grade R (preschool) at Slangspruit Primary and Mags and her husband Phil saw this as an ideal opportunity to offer young Ayanda education opportunities that will set her up for life. A lucky and excited little girl!
