The W.H.E.A.T. (Women’s Hope Education & Training) women from Canada visit Ukulapha in April 2010

From L-R: Marie (guest of W.H.E.A.T.), Sandy (president), Karin (vice), Mr. Msomi (S.P. School principal), Laurie, Adibi.
W.H.E.A.T. is a fund raising organization based in Victoria, B.C., Canada. Ukulapha is one of the many NPOs they support with donations, skills, expertise, camaraderie and generosity of spirit.
It was a delight having them visit; the teachers and children were enthralled as they spent ten days assisting, teaching, cooking a delicious meal for the children and attending a workshop for the community women. For all except Sandy, this was a first visit to our continent and I know they were deeply touched by their experience.
Each brought their own skill set and was in popular demand by the teachers. The students paid rapt attention and were fascinated, listening closely to their lessons and sang and entertained the women; they fell in love!

They brought lots of goodies for the community; visited families and were served a traditional meal by Monica and the women; the delicacy was tripe. Monica’s 3 children go to Slangspruit School; she was overjoyed and felt privileged to prepare a meal for the Canadians; the community was abuzz as the first “white people” came to the area.

Each women got her Canadian lapel pin, many got lipstick to shrieks of delight and other goodies. There were plenty of tears as stories were shared; singing, dancing and rich sharing of sisterhood. The women are deeply impacted by all the Canadians who come to visit them and stay for a while; show curiosity and interest in their lives, share tears, laughter and joy and a sense of common understanding as women and mothers.

It is with great pleasure Ukulapha and the community welcomes visitors and volunteers.
