Since new developments are the product of a creative mind, we must therefore
stimulate and encourage that type of mind in every possible way ~George Washington Carver
Into the second year of Ukulapha’s collaboration with SPS, and with our aim and endeavour to improve teaching and learning conditions for all at the school, it seemed imperative to undertake building repairs. It would seem obvious that the Department of Education would maintain school buildings, but they don’t! and so I chose to personally sponsor the following repairs and upgrades during the school holidays so that the new school year commenced on a fresh note!
There were many broken ceilings and therefore damaged roof membranes, from vandalism, and collections of buckets caught the many leaks in the middle of the classrooms. Way too many window panes were broken, gutters and downpipes missing, electrical outlets non-functioning and dangerous, classroom desks that needed repair, bookshelves begged to be installed as there were none….classroom doors were broken and needed replacing as were door handles…all doors had hooks attached that would secure them to the walls when open. And the girls and boys toilet facilities were in serious need of upgrade and repair.
And every classroom was given a fresh coat of paint!
All this was accomplished by a very efficient team of workers and school opened to many smiling faces…
